A Book Affair to Remember

Pick up some fall reading!

Fall is here. The weather is finally turning– and there was even a slight chill in the air this morning. So, it’s time to think about what books you’ll be tucked in with once the snow and sub-zero temps strike. Perhaps you could pick up a new book for your little one at the annual Fall Scholastic Book Fair?

I have fond memories of when the Book Fair came to my elementary school.  It was an exciting time for us to peruse the shiny new books, hunt for new favorites, and fantasize about the locking diary or Lego book (real Legos included)! Of course, it all came down to when, if, and how much cash mom might be sending with us (in a mysterious sealed envelope) on the big day.  Usually it was just a couple of bucks, but the joy of “shopping” on our own was truly a highlight.

Now, as a parent, I can see the benefits of sending five dollars with my child for the Book Fair. She’ll review some math skills, calculating the cost and counting out her money. She’ll practice some life skills, making an independent decision and learning to be happy with that decision.  She’ll flex her responsible, big-kid muscles, keeping track of her money and then making sure to bring back change.  And lastly, we can talk about how we supported the school by helping to purchase new books for the library– which she uses and enjoys weekly.

Luckily, the Book Fair will be open during Parent / Teacher conferences as well which really is the perfect time for parents to do a little pre-Christmas shopping. Books make enduring gifts and great stocking stuffers. They also serve as a reward (and encouragement) for budding readers as well as support the school.

Are you convinced yet? 🙂

The fall Book Fair will be October 21st to October 27th, including two evenings during parent / teacher conferences, in Walt Disney’s very own library. Many thanks to our librarian, Ms. Merrill, and the book fair volunteers for making this classic event happen year after year.
